Hilton Head Island is truly the ultimate getaway for families to relax and spend time together. While the award-winning resort town is the perfect playground for adults to wine, dine, and unwind, there is a long list of activities for kids to enjoy as well. We’ve put together a list of the best family activities on Hilton Head for you and your family to try out on your next vacation.
#1 - Family Beach Day at Hilton Head
Our first activity is definitely the best, considering that it is free and will entertain you for hours upon hours - the beach! Hilton Head is known for its 12-mile stretch of picturesque white-sand beaches. Pack a lunch, grab some chairs, and head on down to soak up the sun and take a swim.
Since there are so many beaches on the island, you can try out different ones throughout your stay to switch things up. According to town manager, Steve Riley, "Driessen Beach and Islanders Beach parks are particularly good choices for families because they also have playgrounds and picnic shelters.” Coligny Beach is also a great option because it is surrounded by shops, dining, and entertainment.
#2 - Dolphin Watching, Fishing & other Water Activities
If you’re looking for something more adventurous, Hilton Head has plenty of water activities to try. You might try sailing on a fishing charter or searching for dolphins on a dolphin-watching cruise.
Want something more active? We’ve got kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, sailing, jet skiing, parasailing and waterskiing. There’s something that everyone in the family will love, so be sure to hit the water the next time you visit the Lowcountry.
#3 - Tour the Harbour Town Lighthouse
Nothing symbolizes Hilton Head more than our iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse, and lucky for you, there’s a breathtaking view waiting for you at the top. Climb up the 114 steps to learn about the history of Hilton Head along the way, and when you reach the top, you’ll experience one of the most unique gift shops that Hilton Head has to offer. Once you’ve taken pictures and purchased some souvenirs, head on over to The Crazy Crab to enjoy some fresh seafood and to watch the sunset over the marina.
#4 - Family Trip to the Coastal Discovery Museum
Lastly, for an experience that your kids will be sure to remember, head over to The Coastal Discovery Museum where you can explore natural history and cultural heritage on the 68 acre Honey Horn property. The Museum boasts trails, gardens, live oaks, a butterfly enclosure, and even live horses.
Throughout the year, the Museum offers lectures and discussions about the Lowcountry’s history, culture, and environment, so if you’re looking for something educational and fun, this is where you’ll want to be.
